INTERVIEW // Sadie Spencer, director & co-writer of Albee Vector – The Sound Collector

After sell out runs at Bristol Old Vic and Mini Vaults festival, Greenlight Theatre are bringing their smash-hit, interactive children’s show – Albee Vector – to Margate on 23 October at 3pm.

In a re-telling of The Odyssey, Albee travels to the ends of the earth seeking the most beautiful sound in the world. Using a myriad of sounds from his collection – including a gurgling river, seaweed pixies and a badger in the bathtub – Albee, and his friend Andromeda, recount their epic tale. How they picked up a motley crew of friends along the way, navigated treacherous waters and fought a Cyclops, before learning the true meaning of the sound he sought. However, some of the sounds are running low so Albee enlists the audience’s help, and that of his sound hoover, Mustard, to top them up.

We caught up with the director and co-writer of the show Sadie Spencer to find out more.

What was the inspiration behind the show?

“As a company, we’d never made any work for children before but we were excited by the prospect of doing it because you can really let loose your imagination.  The character of Albee emerged after a series of conversations about what kind of person might keep sounds in jam jars. Some people have commented that Albee might have been inspired by my dad who spent his life surrounded by sounds and recording equipment in his profession as a jingle writer. I’m not so sure about this, but Albee is certainly a lovable character.”

What makes the show special?

“The fact that it is interactive. The audience have to make sounds for Albee to record and that means that everyone gets to join in with Albee’s adventure. As a company we always try to be ambitious and push ourselves and I think audiences can expect something a little bit different from this show.”

Who would you recommend it to?

“There’s lots of laughs for both children and adults and a really strong story so although we recommend ages 3-7 as guidance I think you’ll enjoy it whether you’re a just getting your milk teeth or just getting your false teeth.”
