Red Ladies Mission Report
Tuesday 15 July 2014 - Three members of the Theatre Royal team made their way to London for a special rendezvous with the Red Ladies.
7.46am - Two members of the team boarded the train at Margate and set off for London (the third member of the team was still trying to find a space in the car park)
8.16am - The third member of the team is finally on a train a London. Better late than never!
10.30am - We arrive at Somerset House to meet up with friends and associates from theatres across the country. The workshop session commences at 11am.
3.30pm - Workshop finishes and we all head towards London's Southbank.
7.15pm - After a spot of dinner and taking in the colourful sights and wonderful sounds along the Southbank we head to the Southbank Centre for our rendezvous with the mysterious Red Ladies.
7.30pm - They're everywhere - and we still don't know who they are nor what they want!
7.45pm - We're rounded up by the Red Ladies and led out and around the building to the rear stage door entrance. Flanked in all directions by these ever mysterious figures. The intrigue continues to build as we are led into the auditorium. Red Ladies are everywhere, always busy.
8pm - The 'demonstration' commences - “We are not what you think. No matter what you think, we are not that.”
9pm - The 'demonstration' ends to a huge standing ovation. Very loud applause.
I bet you're wondering what on earth happened and what we thought of it... ok here it goes:
"Having not been to any kind of contemporary or new theatre before I really didn't know what to expect. The level of intrigue throughout the build up and the performance/demonstration itself ensured that I was gripped to the action. It was a frantic attack on the senses but in a good way. It's a piece of theatre that can only be interpreted by an individual psychically going to see it, which I highly recommend you do whilst it's with us in Margate" Kyle : Member of the Your Leisure Marketing Team (the one that missed his train)
"Indescribable, a brilliantly baffling experience that you really won't want to miss. Modern visual art on stage, performed by the mysterious and striking women of the Red Ladies, there was no mistaking the sentiments of female empowerment that comes with this piece." Jon - Member of the Theatre Royal Marketing Team
"I was intrigued throughout and enjoyed the performance, it was brilliant, although I still cannot explain exactly what the Red Ladies are about and left feeling a little bewildered, but a good bewildered. I'll definitely be going along again when it's in Margate" Sam - Margate Theatres Box Office
Now here's what the professional critics had to say about the Red Ladies
"The 18-strong cast are absolutely phenomenal, and while it would take my whole world count to name every single one, each ‘red lady’ brings their own personality and flare to the show." - A Younger Theatre
"Bizarre, fantastical, original and witty… but mind boggling" - Everything Theatre
"Some scenes pack a terrific punch. Slipping into print frocks, the 60s-chic movie-star icons become figures of 50s femininity, cogs in a choreographic machine of pistoning jumps and shuttling limbs, breaking open into a black-clad episode of anarchy that suggests both the liberation and violence of a revolution." - The Guardian
"This clever performance features patches of sometimes oblique but affecting poetic text... and an evocative soundtrack from Paul Clark that layers a huge range of historical and cultural voices, sound effects and musical styles. As the collective embodiment of domesticity and discord, enthralment and emancipation, female folly and wisdom, the women's collective meaning is thoughtfully left open to interpretation." - The Times
They've arrived in Margate... keep an eye out
The Red Ladies will be around Margate on Wednesday 23rd, Thursday 24th & Friday 25th July as part of the Summer of Colour.
